The Work Back Program is a Board-approved program consisting of up to five components, and a contractual agreement with Miami-Dade County Public Schools. Through participation in the Work Back Program, a student can be re-entered into a traditional school setting before the expiration of the expulsion period.
- An Alternative Education Specialist will meet with the parent(s)/guardian(s) and the student who has been recommended for expulsion to work out a plan for the student to follow in lieu of expulsion.
- The parent(s)/guardian(s) and the student must sign a contractual agreement, which consists of academic, behavioral, counseling and attendance components.
- The Work Back Program becomes effective the day the agreement is signed and the student attends the educational placement.
- The Alternative Education Specialist will monitor the student’s progress during the expulsion period and receive reports from the persons who have been designated to supervise the student in each component.
- When the student successfully completes the contractual agreement, the Alternative Education Specialist will certify the completion and make the recommendation for the student to return to a traditional school program. The Alternative Education Specialist will make contact with the intended traditional school site.
- The Alternative Education Specialist will monitor the student for one semester after return to the traditional school program. Should there be deterioration in the student’s behavior, a reassignment to an alternative school site may occur.
